Recent research indicates that school leaders have the same impact on student performance as classroom teachers. Principals oversee systems, curriculum, school culture and safety, staff evaluation, the recruitment, hiring, and retention of diverse staff, create strong teaching and learning environments, and ensure educational equity.

The Leadership Instructional Feedback Tool (LIFT) is an evidence-based tool designed to support developing equitable leadership through improved post-observation feedback practices. Feedback delivery is a skill, which can be developed over time. LIFT provides guided support for school leaders to deliver actionable and constructive feedback to teachers.

Leading Data Conversations Tool

The Leading Data Conversations Tool allows superintendents, assistant superintendents, human resource directors, and other coaches and evaluators to record information about a principal’s performance during a data discussion, assess the principal’s performance level rating on six behavioral indicators to coach school leaders to deliver effective conversations on data in multiple settings. The GTL Center team offers state-of-the-art technical assistance services to support clients to utilize this tool and take action based on a collaborative discussions of data in multiple settings.

Arizona Department of Education Principal Supervisor Network (with REL-West)

Like many school leaders, principals in Arizona usually received very limited support, particularly for job-embedded professional development and coaching. Creating conditions for improved principal supports requires new learning for individual supervisors and organizational change within district central offices.

The Arizona Department of Education collaborated with the GTL Center to lead the Arizona Principal Supervisor (APS) learning series, which included formal online professional learning activities and online coaching support for superintendents and assistant superintendents to improve their principal supervisory practices. Thirteen principal supervisors supported at least two principals each during the professional learning sequence, analyzed data to inform coaching, and participated in coaching and professional learning. GTL experts led development of APS content and implementation while providing coaching support to principal supervisors.
