The Educator Shortages in Special Education Toolkit is organized around the guiding principle that short-term strategies to meet immediate demand must be intentionally paired with long-term, systemic strategies to attract, prepare, and retain effective special education teachers to create comprehensive shortage solutions. Although this toolkit is designed speciﬁcally to address teacher shortages in special education, most of the pieces of the toolkit can be used to address any type of teacher shortage.
A free, user-friendly, Excel-based tool, this resource is the foundation for a data-driven process to help users identify and visualize the development of educator diversity gaps across the entire career continuum.
- Users enter their own data, and the tool automatically generates easy-to-understand graphs and charts.
- State, district, school, and preparation program leaders can use the tool to ground a deeper, data-rich conversation with planning teams and stakeholders.
- The data tool also includes a geographic information systems component to support place-based analysis.
Teacher shortages is a severe problem in special education.
