Access and Equity: Strengthening Leadership Capacity

Over the past several years, states have invested heavily in the training, recruitment, evaluation, development, and support of classroom teachers. Despite the vital role that school principals play in teaching and learning, states have concentrated much less on the principal pipeline. In February 2016, Cortney Rowland presented on opportunities for developing the principal pipeline for the West Comprehensive Center. The presentation emphasized the importance of principles in improving student learning and policy levers for enhancing principal effectiveness, including:

  • Principal standards
  • Preparation and training
  • Licnesure
  • Recruitment and hiring
  • Induction and mentoring
  • Evaluation
  • Professional Learning

The presentation highlights examples from Missouri, Illinois, Denver, Maryland, Delaware, Kentucky, and Colorado.
