Career Pathways and Extending the Reach of Excellent Teachers

Staffing structure redesign could potentially maximize the impact of a school’s top teachers and give more high-need students access to great teaching. At the “Topical Meeting on Equitable Access to Excellent Teachers and Leaders,” hosted by the Center on Great Teachers and Leaders (GTL Center) and the Council of Chief State School Officers on February 3 and 4, 2015, Public Impact’s Bryan Hassel and Nita Losoponkul discussed strategies that increase the average number of students reached by each of the great teachers currently available.  Participants will learn about several options for offering excellent teachers meaningful career pathways in classroom-based roles with greater pay, within current budgets.  Participants will consider actions that the state can take to encourage and support the development of such career pathways as well as how current state policies might impede such efforts.
