Leadership Pipeline and Preparation

School leadership pipeline improvement is an essential component of equity planning–but one that is easily overlooked or relegated to an ancillary role. At the “Topical Meeting on Equitable Access to Excellent Teachers and Leaders,” hosted by the Center on Great Teachers and Leaders (GTL Center) and the Council of Chief State School Officers on February 3 and 4, 2015,  Sarah Silverman and Cortney Rowland of the National Governor’s Association (NGA) Center for Best Practices presented on improving the principal pipeline. This presentation provides a framework for addressing leadership pipeline quality in equity planning, including general context on typical weaknesses and areas for improvement as well as ways to investigate individual state needs and prioritize improvements. Participants will learn about the NGA Center’s self-assessment tool and work through some scenarios with their teams.
