School Check: Assess Your School’s Resources Use Against Four Key Principles

These links contain tools for elementary school and secondary school leaders to establish whether they are using resources strategically and to help them determine areas where spending could be reduced. The tools are based on strategies taken from the 2008 book The Strategic School: Making the Most of People, Time and Money by Karen Hawley Miles and Stephen Frank and also are taken from Education Resource Strategies evaluations of successful practices of high-performing schools across the United States. The four key principles assessed by these tools are:

  • Prioritize teaching effectiveness
  • Target individual attention
  • Maximize academic time
  • Minimize noninstructional spending
