Student Learning Objectives (SLO)

This guidebook from the Arizona Department of Education outlines the process for developing SLOs. It provides guidance and details for each step, including determining students’ level of preparedness, choosing quality assessments, setting SLOs, monitoring progress and refining instruction, and reviewing results. The guidebook includes several templates to complete and approve SLOs.

This rubric from Harrison School District Two determines the quality of a performance growth goal and helps establish the scoring of a goal. The rubric is divided into seven levels of quality and performance, and includes indicators of the quality of the goal for each level. 

Harrison School District Two created a performance growth goal scoring sheet. This tool includes checkboxes for an evaluator to score a performance goal based on the Individual Student Achievement Goal rubric. It also includes space for both the teacher and evaluator to write comments on the goal. 

Harrison School District Two developed a template for teachers to complete their performance growth goals. This template includes space for teachers to state their goals, the data they analyzed to determine their goal, their plan of action, and the final evaluation of the goal.

In Harrison School District Two in Colorado, teachers develop one performance growth goal focused on student achievement, a second on teacher practice, and a third of their choosing. This guidebook outlines the process for developing performance growth goals, beginning on page 63. It includes the goal templates and a rubric to determine the quality of the goal and the level at which the teacher met his or her goal. 

This worksheet from St. Vrain Valley Schools, Colorado, explains the types of student learning targets available and the types of growth targets that teachers can set, depending on their assessment and baseline data. The worksheet provides a couple of data sets and asks participants to develop a student learning target based on the data. The worksheet concludes with several guiding questions for participants to work on based on the growth target they developed. 

This SLO template from the New York State Department of Education includes space for educators to write on each required component of an SLO for the state. These components include population, learning content, interval of instructional time, evidence, baseline, targets, scoring, and rationale. 

SLOs serve as one locally selected measure option for districts in New York. This presentation provides a road map for districts as they implement the SLO process and will help them consider how SLOs will fit into the larger context of the full teacher evaluation system. 

The New York State Department of Education created this webinar to provide practical steps for successfully closing out the SLO process. This webinar will enable principals, district leaders, and teachers to consider systems for scoring assessments used within SLOs, translate outcomes into scores, determine ratings, and reflect on results to inform instructional approaches. 

Some districts permit teachers to develop schoolwide SLOs as one measure of student growth. This webinar from the New York State Department of Education discusses how to develop a schoolwide SLO using a high school academic intervention services teacher as an example.
